Spent a few days in Berlin again. I really enjoy that city. It’s big, it’s cosmopolitan, it has its own neighbourhoods with their own feel, it has history and an interesting story. It is ever-changing. We walked a lot, saw the main tourist sites, sat in cafes. We went to the Checkpoint Charlie Museum one day to get out of the pouring rain. Interesting place but information overload. There were many incredible stories from the GDR era of escape and heroism and determination and daring. One day we spent at East African consulates trying to get visas but discovering that it’s more complicated than it really ought to be and that getting them at the border is the only option for me now.
Highlight was meeting up with Mark and his friends Andreas and Andrew who I got to know when I was there in September. They are great and we decided to invite them all out for dinner. And we all enjoyed seeing each other again. Andrew changed his tutoring students so that he wouldn’t miss out and Andreas brought me a rose. They were both so excited and hilarious. We went to an Ethiopian restaurant and were treated very well there. The food was interesting and quite good, even if some of it did look quite unappetizing. We all had a great time. We laughed a lot and were very free. We saw Mark almost every day for a bit. It was nice to reconnect with him too. He's on the last stretch of finishing his thesis and degree and then moving back to Toronto! Yahoo!....but then where will I stay the next time I'm in Berlin??
We headed out on Thursday. We walked to the Tempelhof airport. Strange it was to walk to the airport. It's a very cool little airport. It felt like walking back into time. It was built in the 30s. And it was there too where during the Cold War they had to airlift in supplies to West Berlin. They want to close down the use of the airport but there is also a lot of backlash. Anyway we rented a car there and then headed out on Road Trip part 2. Not a Smart this time but a Mercedes. More room and smoother though it wasn't as fun to name.
