Los animales

Dolphins:   A couple of times we’ve seen dolphins come very close the shore.  They are very beautiful to watch.  We were up on the roof top pool patio surveying the view when we saw them.  The waters must be rich with fish in the area.  Pelicans spend their days fishing close to shore too!

Pelicans:  The pelicans are very cool.  We’ve been enjoying their antics.  The way they fish is hilarious.  They eye a fish from on high, and dive-bomb straight down, beak first into the water.  Then bobbing back up they stretch out their necks to swallow the fish.  It’s fun when a number of them go barreling down at the same time, sometimes seemingly for the same fish.  In the evening they group together and soar around in the sky.  When you’re up on the roof top pool patio they go soaring right by you.  Larry and I think they look like marauding teenagers who are strolling about town, looking for what they might get up to.

Iguanas:  There is a little island near where we are staying that is in the river Cuale that likely is coming down off the mountains and definitely emptying into the sea.  You can see iguanas there hanging out in the trees eating the leaves.  The ones we saw are quite large, orange, bearded and have quite the mohawk! 

Whales:  We’ve seen whales in the bay too a couple of times.  On Monday, when Larry and I were at our favourite beach bar hang out place (The Red Onion) we saw three or four of them playing in the sunset.  They are humpback whales…though we couldn’t actually tell from how far away we were but those are the whales that hang out here.  It has been very neat to seem them in their natural habitat.  I think they were my favourite.
