Lady Kaareen and Lorrrd Larrrry
Monday we hiked up in the heat to the castle fortress that sits on top of the rock. It’s called Hohensalzburg. It is a medieval castle compound and we walked through its walls and some of its rooms. I kept thinking that if we were in the movies we’d find ourselves in a time warp, thrown back into time and we would get to experience what life would really have been like in those days.
In the evening we went to the K&K restaurant. We’d been there with the choir and had a mass-produced simple chicken, rice and frozen veggies meal. Now we wanted to try their real menu. We wondered how the K&K (Kaiserlich und Königlich) would play itself out. Georg and Kirsten had eaten there and very much enjoyed their meal so we thought we’d try it out for ourselves. But the menu was different than the one on Saturday night. So I asked. “Oh, we’re not serving that menu on the terrace tonight for a variety of different reasons, blah, blah, blah... But I can ask about it.”, the waitress said. The next thing we new, the manager came and presented us with the other menu and promptly became our very personal waiter. We picked the Chef’s wine and menu option, with carpaccio, beef filet, chanterelle cream sauce and dumplings and a cheese plate to finish off. “Oh, our personal waiter exclaimed, that’s a more complicated choice.” I offered that we choose something else but he insisted that they would make it work. He treated us so well. The table was elegantly set, he called us “Meine Herrschaften.” He kept refilling our wine glasses and we really felt like we were the lord and lady who had come down from the castle, while the others ate Wiener Schnitzel and potatoes. It was a perfect evening.
Now we’re on a train, on our way to Maastricht to visit with my cousin’s family.
